I remember congregating in our “soon to arrive” baby’s room with my wife, Patti, my sister and sister-in-law – trying to come up with a name for our future daughter! Patti was scheduled to deliver the next day and we were playing, “NAME THAT BABY!” O the names we came up with over 25 years ago! We ended up naming our beautiful baby girl, Jessica Janette Sikes. Previously, Patti and I had studied with and baptized a young lady named Janette; a young woman in her early twenties, full of joy and the Holy Spirit! After her conversion, she died of leukemia, so faithfully strong, that we decided to name our first baby girl after her – Janette.

2,758 or so years ago, the prophet Isaiah was invited into a “soon to arrive” baby’s room along with the Father, the Spirit and the Word of God! Isaiah’s only required ticket at the door was to have a seraphim touch his mouth with a burning coal (Isaiah 6). Part of his message? “NAME THAT BABY!”.

1. Wonderful Counselor
2. Mighty God
3. Eternal Father
4. Prince of Peace

Names are important. If you don’t believe me, ask someone who was in the Messiah’s “soon to arrive” baby room! “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) God is good!
Speaking of names, Scott and I became Grandparents again in December. We were a bit scared of what name our Grandson was going to be named, as my daughter, Toni, and our son-in-law, Jeremy, have names that have been picked on for most of their childhood. Each name that they picked out we would try and say someting positive even if we didn't like the name - Liam? Elliot? Really? Finally they came up with a name....Julian Edison. Phew, we'll take it! A decent name so what if it's named after John Lennon's son!! Trust me, it could have been a whole lot worse. Regardless, Julian was born on December 5th weighing 8# 2oz and he is a very healthy baby with very healthy lungs with a very proud (and a bit jealous) 3 year old sister. I flew down to Austin and spent a week playing with Audri, trying to help her with this new transition in her life. When I got home to Indiana, I realized that Christmas was a mere 10 days away and the tree wasn't up, no cards had been sent, no baking had been done or no presents had been bought!!! You know what? This Christmas was the best we've had in years, we did't panic and get crazy we just decided to buy for the children and our parents and be done with it. For the first time in both of our lives, we took a step back and realized that Christmas is not about shopping and decorating and baking and getting all caught up with the commericialization of the season but it's about a boy being born. This year we have a boy that's a grandson, named Julian, but one year it was a boy - a Saviour named Jesus and that is what christmas is all about. I hope that from now on our Christmases will for-ever be changed. Because every Christmas will be having a Birthday party for Julian and just 20 days later, we'll be having a Birthday party for Jesus too!! Much love Steve, miss you much!! SO much!! Sonya
