Supporting Scripture:
"How then shall they call upon Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they be sent? Romans 10:14-15
"
Purpose:
This ministry exists to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus, who instructed us to take the Gospel to the entire world. Since the Pitman church became self-supporting many years ago, the elders have been committed to sending financial support to missionaries who work in difficult areas.
We currently support missionaries in France, China, and Tanzania, as well as two churches in New Jersey: the Camden congregation and the Cape May CH congregation.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain contact with our missionaries to support them and determine their effectiveness.
- Invite the missionaries that we support to visit us.
- Coordinate the dates for these visits with the church office and the elders.
- Make sure the missionaries who visit us have housing.
- Arrange for a luncheon with the missionaries and interested members.
- Send cards to missionary families on appropriate occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).
- Monitor the reports from our missionaries. If reports do not arrive, remind them that our elders have requested bi-monthly or quarterly reports.
- Notify the elders if those reports are not forthcoming.
- Encourage our members to visit our missionaries.
- Talk to the elders when our missionaries need increased financial support.
- Screen requests for assistance.
- Examine requests and prepare a recommendation for the elders.
- Return a response to the minister who wrote.
- Encourage our own members to participate in evangelistic efforts. Inform the congregation of mission opportunities. Explain the financial support we will offer them.
Note:
Missionaries are special people who have given up much of what the rest of us enjoy here in America. They have done this to serve God. They go through culture shock when they arrive at their foreign destination, and they often experience reverse culture shock when they return home. They need to know that we care about them and support their efforts.
- I have two goals for our church's mission efforts:
- To have a friendly, close, and supportive relationship with each of our missionaries
- To send additional missionaries.
- I am happy to serve in this congregation. I know the Bible is being truly taught, and I see how the love of God has filled the lives of the brothers and sisters here.
